Our cuff links are hand made in the United States by a skilled metalsmith of the finest materials. We ensure each item meets our exacting standards in the humble hope they will satisfy you.

Let us also keep in mind that this is the day two of the most famous patriots passed fifty years after having signed the hollowed document. Jefferson and Adams both died on July 4, 1826. An occasion for sober minds this may seem, we should by all means imbibe grog and be thankful for our sacrosanct liberty. The Modern Traditionalist and I created a beverage to commemorate this noble day in honor of the Father of these States United, George Washington. The concoction is named for his solemnity of manner, the Gravitas. More on that later...now back to celebrating.

Sartorial Icon: Thomas Crown

One of my favorite films is the Thomas Crown Affair (yes, the 1968 version). The recent '90s version is entertaining, but the original has far more character, which is often the case in my opinion. The risqué scene where Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway seduce each other over chess is far more entertaining than the ubiquitous state of undress one confronts in today's films.

What do you ~~get for~~ learn from the man who has everything? Perhaps, we learn a look is more about an attitude of confidence than mere attire. His confidence comes through whether sporting a bespoke suit or ball cap.

The Classics: Aviators

Many styles come and go, but few persevere. I prefer the classic aesthetic. Few sunglasses have endured as the classic aviator has. Above are my current pairs. Having always loved the look, my first pair was procured on a budget during my college days. They were quickly misplaced. Keen to keep with the sartorial statement, a second pair was purchased a few years ago on a whim. I was pleased with my now second (read replacement) set of American Optical aviators. I was until Randolph Engineering sent me a pair this fall to see - and eventually keep. They are the genuine article.

At first glance, the differences are hardly noticeable. The moment you put them into service the distinctions are apparent. RE frames are curved slightly, contouring to the natural curve or your visage. This makes them infinitely more wearable on a consistent basis. They are far more comfortable and block more light because of this simple distinction. Take a close look at the image below and you see the difference in build quality. Hinges are important on glasses as they are constantly stressed when used. The folks at Randolph include a useful cleaning cloth, hard case and maintenance kit with each pair or glasses. It's a nice touch, but it affirms theirs are built to be repaired not replaced. That is something to be commended these days as most goods aren't durable.

My AO glasses were quickly weighed, measured and found wanting. In sum, if you want to look good like the gentleman below you should purchase AOs. My AOs have held up and have much use left in them, but they aren't as sturdy as their competitor. If you are, indeed, the man shown below, put your money down and get the best. Once you go RE, you wont go back.

I didn't purchase the glasses, but I gladly would have. The review is truly my own findings without any input from the manufacturer. In fact, the glasses are so good I've worn them too often and am in the process of purchasing replacement lenses. These glasses are a staple in my wardrobe.

A Leg Up - Thermoregulation

I've seen the issue come up lately and wanted to say my two cents on the matter. Being Manly did an excellent post on men's shorts over a year ago. When considering looks alone, pants claim the trophy. Exculpatory factors do exist in my world. Respectfully, I must disagree with my The Rt. Hon. Vir Beatum and the conclusion most make, which is to not wear shorts. The arguments for the aesthetically disagreeable nature of shorts by comparison to long trousers are quite accurate. Also, one must wear shorts correctly, taking into account time and place. I prefer the look of a woman's legs to any man's. Having said that, compliments have been extended on my own legs by members of the opposite sex (and come to think of it, one awkwardly memorable comment from male friend). So then, were these ladies being polite or do women find men in shorts attractive?

In short, much of my life has been spent in the dreary cold climates of the middle Western states of America. Yes, I wore shorts as a boy, even suits with shorts. My blood is of Irish, German and French lineage. The Irish being the vast majority must have something to do with my personal thermometer - as it is always ready for a cold and damp climate. I'm very nearly perennially excessively warm, even when others are chattering their pearly whites and fighting to keep extremities from hypothermia. Perhaps this make me exothermic? In any case, I endeavor to keep from perspiring without added external variables like weather.

For undergraduate studies, New Orleans was my home. More sweltering places are few and far between. Yes, here I frequented the Bermuda as was the necessary convention to beat the heat. Frequently, oppressive humidity and heat taught me great love for the short.

Today, I am settled in the District, formerly swamp land, with all due tropical meteorological significances. It is once again necessary don the short pants for sake of thermoregulation. When on days like today the temperature approaches triple digits with similar figures of humidity, the short is a savior.

Length is an entirely problematic. These days the term shorts seems to be a misnomer...

These are not short. Equally problematic are the too short shorts...

This really flatters no man. Then again I wont be telling these Gents to bare less leg...

These are perfectly acceptable forms or resort wear in my opinion, but let's keep this length for destination holidays. As for the adequate length, shorts should sit above your knee when standing while concealing your undergarments, especially when sitting. Evidently, Mr. Selleck makes the cut. The fit should be close to the body so as not to sag off the frame. See below for length and fit.

Not Nattering: Jefferson's Ten Rules

There is value in codifying a list of rules to guide your future behavior. You probably do it all the time without realizing. These days, it seems we make more to do lists for the completion external endeavors. For instance, I make to-do lists daily and weekly. I do this for personal and professional tasks. To do what Jefferson's has above requires quite a bit of introspection and reflection to know even where to begin.

It would behoove us to reflect then write down areas where we can improve based on past behavior. Make a quarterly appointment with yourself to sit for quiet introspection about how you can improve. Jefferson's rules are a great starting point for everyone. George Washington, Ben Franklin and others took a crack at it also. MT and I have a framed copy of TJ's rules in our office at home above where we keep our house keys. Once in a while, I find myself breaking the rules. In particular, the first and fourth rules seem to sneak up on me from time to time. The point is I recognize it. I have begun to question myself in the moment. Sometime between TJ's and our own, we discarded the goal of perfecting ourselves (or maybe it's just me). We are caught up in our profession, or like affairs, instead of the business of self-actualization. Let us no longer forgo this noble ambition.

Article of Affection: My Double Monks

Yes, these are the much discussed Sid Mashburn Double Monk straps made by Alfred Sargent. Yes, they are mine. Yes, I love them. No, I don't sleep with them on my feet. I procured them in late January this year to mark the conclusion of a very significant program I completed at work. They feel as good on my feet as it does to know that program is over. I have long been fascinated by monk strap shoes especially the clean simplicity of their design combined with their unique functional charm. My father introduced them to me when we were on vacation in England and Ireland. There I acquired a pair of Church & Co. tan brogue monk straps until my foot sadly grew. If those shoes ever cross my path, there won't be a hesitation. Having seen the post on A Headlong Dive, it occurred to me I needed to share this purchase here.

Unlike Mr. Simmons of AHD, I did not call Sid Mashburn to place my order, but instead joined Taigan, where Sid Mashburn has an online store. After placing my order, the genial and obliging gents at Sid Mashburn called me to confirm my order. They wanted to make sure I would be satisfied and had ordered the correct size, which was a half size down per their recommendation. The purchase has been more than satisfactory. Perhaps the only issue is it left me wanting more...

Tie Tuesday: The Ascot

Recently, MT and I were in Italy for a much needed holiday. Among the items procured, an ascot/cravat. A curiosity had long been building in my mind about them and I caved. Here is the result...

And I may need never recover from this youthful folly. The simple truth is: who doesn't want silk around their neck? I also learned that the ascot worn as above is known as a day cravat. Apparently, ascots are also the name for the article worn on the outside of the shirt under the collar for more formal occasions, like weddings, which I had thought was a cravat. (I still prefer the bow tie for formal occasions.) Far from an expert on this, I'll refrain from expatiating on the history of the garment's evolution, but suffice it to say it was interesting research. In any case, I have since found the ascot to be a sensible and stylish alternative to the open collar, albeit unconventional and best applied irregularly. Not to mention a comfortable choice. Who else has been known to wear such attire?

Warm Weather Wear

We are back to the warm sticky weather of the District. These driving loafers are my favorite shoes. Excellent shoes for running errands all over town, especially if you drive as I do. No, I am not one of those reckless people, but I do enjoy employing the manual shift maneuverability of my MINI. Best of all, these shoes fit like a glove making them second nature to my stride.

The Modern Traditionalist and I were running errands this morning in anticipation of a few friends' arrival this evening for a quaint cookout. Among our chores, MT took me to Garden District to pick up some herbs for our balcony garden. It's an excellent place to procure choice vegetation. She has pick up almost all our thriving flora there. The thriving though is more likely due to her diligent green thumb.

Open Mouth Mastication

Open mouth mastication is completely unacceptable. In my new occupation due to the location of my desk, I have the misfortune of suffering the audible sounds of such a person. Carrots and apples, no less, are the foods of choice. I am confounded by this brazenly crass behavior. The fact is the behavior is commonplace in modern society. Such a lack of etiquette is the result of poor parenting; moreover, it is the product of an inconsiderate person, who takes no interest in elevating their stature.

This matter led me to consult the only volume containing answers on how to handle this situation, Etiquette. Here is what it says: "All the rules of table manners are made to avoid ugliness. To let anyone see what you have in your mouth is offensive; to make a noise is to suggest an animal; to make a mess is disgusting." Emily Post's Etiquette, p.g. 485, 1955 edition. This week, I could take it no more. I had to address the situation with the culprit. They have since endeavored, due entirely to my indefatigable correction, to chew with their mouth closed in near silence. Indeed, I, like Mr. Jefferson, tremble for my country if this is the condition in which the mass majority of parents release their children into society.

My Timbuk2

Now that I am no longer commuting to work via car, I have a renewed love for my daily commuting companion. This is my Timbuk2 bag. It has withstood more than 5 years of abuse including many thousands of travel miles for work and pleasure. No, it is not the most beautiful or elegant bag one could choose to carry on a daily basis, but it does everything you need it to do. The only other bag that has ever come close to handling every situation is a LL Bean book pack. Even those fall prey to weather being as they are not water resistant. This has kept my items safe and dry in many inclement situations.

I recently added this Cocoon Grid-it organizer to keep things in their place. This is a wonderful little invention for those of us who like to keep things organized while in transit. I like to have a multifarious assortment of items with me, just in case. The organizer keeps each item findable. Whether attaché case, shoulder bag, messenger bag, back pack, book pack, satchel, briefcase, tote bag or, yes - for the ladies, purse there is a Grid-it organizer for you. They even offer a luggage size. No, I was not solicited for any kind of coverage of this product. It is a great product for frequent traveller and commuter alike.

Sure a beautifully crafted case is more ideal to complete the elegant gentlemanly persona I prefer, but none are as functional as my simple messenger bag. For occasions that dictate, I use a more elegant canvas and leather shoulder bag. There is no doubt I would rather use a beautiful leather briefcase to carry my wares to and from the office daily. The issue there becomes: how do I multitask effortlessly? Reading the paper is made easy with this over the shoulder bag. Also, in the event of inclemency, there's no need to fret about any electronics in tow; moreover, I do not need to worry about the case itself being damaged.

In sum, this messenger bag has treated me very well over the years and I don't foresee abandoning it for another option anytime soon. I welcome your suggestions or comments on daily commuting appurtenances.

An Addition

The Modern Traditionalist and I have a new addition in our ranks. Meet Lord Quincy. I am not one to extol those, who treat their animals as children. I am here proving that "dog people" can be "cat people".

Formerly named Bones, we adopted Q, as we have come to call him, just over two weeks ago from a local shelter. He was at one time living on his own and was recovered alone from a parking lot. Quincy has certainly adjusted from life on the street as seen below resting on his favorite cashmere throw after reading about WWI with me.

Quincy is proving to be a delightful addition to our lives. I've always been a real "dog person". Here it seems, Q is cat for a "dog person". He sees you off in the morning and greets you upon return in the evening. Q aims to please from the moment you arrive. What cat greets you with a wagging tail and a wet tongue? He does. His favorite activity is rolling on his back while receiving belly rubs. Q enjoys showing off his hunting skills when chasing his toys around the apartment.

He simply does not act like a conventional cat. For instance, when you call, he comes to you. I believe he fancies himself a bird dog, a faithful labrador. In this respect, he is picking up exactly where his predecessor, Rudy, left off. Rudy - AKA the Furry Eccentric - was a unique feline in much the same way. We are happy to have little Q. He is a dog in a cat's body.

Gratitude to Google

Ferris Bueller had it right, "life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop to look around every once in a while, you might just miss it."

Upon Reflection of recent days reserved for restoration of mind and body, I've come to realize that has not actually happened. Days have been filled with endless list making and box checking. I must be doing something wrong. The particulars have amassed tremendous proportions from neglect. We have all been overworked or busy to the point of letting things fall by the wayside.

How can I keep up with it all? Mobile devices don't seem to help, but rather further hinder your ability to accomplish tasks without interruption. They bring the worst side effect of all: inability to disconnect and shut off. I am all for the added productivity and enjoy the benefits of connectivity, namely the genius of Google anywhere.

So I suppose the answer is that you don't keep up with it. Life is imperfection done well. Learn to like it! Thus, I decided on a few days ago no more box checking for me. It's R&R from here on out.

On Parenting

I should premise this with the disclosure that I have no children. The above picture is representative of how I remember the "fear" that governed my childhood behavior. I was a fairly mature youth and did not require much discipline (Mom: if you are reading this...no comments please;-). I remember one time I stuck one of my prized Matchbox cars into my dress sock before heading out to church. Having found out who was giving the homily (I was raised Roman Catholic), I went straight for the concealed car. It entertained me, while the oration went far beyond its apportioned period. There was no punishment in this case because no one noticed what I was doing. It is that simple skill children today rarely exhibit: discretion. Well behaved tomfoolery is hardly cause for concern.

During my time off, I've seen quite a few parents with small children running about town for errands and adventures alike. Why is it that so many children are so badly behaved...or is it that they are very badly parented? Perhaps it's just the memory of my own childhood that arouses these questions. For those of you reading, this is not meant to be a condemnation of all parents, only the parents who let their children run amok.

A tantrum in public was simply unacceptable in my household. Children today seem to throw tantrums for minuscule motives. I feared the worst should I get out of hand. One small child recently threw a fit in the middle of the post office for the reasons completely imperceptible. The young boy was running all around the post office without any supervision. Worse yet, the mother did not notice at all. How did she not notice the lout disturbing patrons by bumping into them and screaming all the while? Once she realized he was missing, probably from a lack of piercing shrieks, she ventured to find him. He had just made a run for the exit and nearly got away with it. He then threw a tantrum. I was appalled. Yet the mother let it continue.

Suffice it to say that it would not have flown under my supervision. This brings me to my next question. Why, as Americans, do we seemingly put up with it rather than speaking out? In France it would have been completely acceptable for an adult to drag the child to his parent and deliver a stern reprimand to each. The reason must be the state of our highly national consciousness. The thought of such a lawsuit makes me immeasurably happy that I left the idea of law school in the past (more on that another time).

A Gentlemanly Shave: An appeal to men

Too many men succumb to the mass appeal of a quick fix. The foams, gels and balms easily obtained surely do the job of a shave, but by no means to any degree of satisfaction. Simply put, the shave hasn’t been significantly advanced by modern technology. So, men stop looking for modern means. The simple fact is an old-fashioned shave is far better for your skin. As a bonus, it imbues you with a sense of old world luxurious pampering. You’ll embark on your day with an extra hint of ancestral charm.

For those who enjoy using precise products, you’re in luck. The choices are seemingly endless. You will have to experiment and seek out what works for you. There are only a few shops that carry multiple brands of product so you’ll be visiting a few proprietors. A few I recommend are: Aidan Gill (New Orleans), Caswell-Masey (Select National), Truefitt & Hill (national), The Art of Shaving (national) Crabtree-Evelyn (national), L’Occitane (national), Saks, Nordstrom, Sephora and other purveyors of traditional or fine grooming goods.

You’d find the following items in my dopp kit, which are listed in order of use. After a thorough, yet gentle face wash, I apply Kiehls’ “Close-Shavers” Shaving Formula #31 oil to soften the beard, which also provides an easy shave due to reduced friction with the razor. Next, I use a pure badger brush to apply a hearty lather of Crabtree & Evelyn’s Nomad Shave Soap. Your prepping is complete.

The razor is the key ingredient. It must be sharp no matter what you use. I have a straight razor, but have only wielded it on a handful of experimental occasions, since it is seriously precarious. Opting for safety and modern convenience, a multi-blade or safety razor will do the job. Now, shave with the grain. Clean your razor after each pass, then once complete reapply lather for round two, which should be against the grain. *Skip this step if you are prone to irritable skin, as I am.* Rinse, then observe thy countenance. Surely, this will be among the closest shaves you have ever had. I like to finish off with a few sprays of rose water hydrating toner to reduce irritation prior to moisturizing with pure aloe gel.

For traveling and days with little time for such extravagant formalities, use a real shaving cream. You’ll find them in a tub or tube, not a can. These creams are formulated for an instantly rich lather to moisturize your skin during the shave. As a trick, apply it with the badger brush and you’ll use less with no loss of lather.

Sure, this seems like a lot of work for something so trivial. Your skin and your beloved will thank you. Admittedly, I’m not able to take the time for the full treatment each day, but when I do I am a better man for it. When you do have the extra time, find a reputable barber in your area and treat yourself to a shave under the tutelage of a professional.

Happiness 101

The Modern Traditionalist tagged me on this a number of weeks ago, but ambivalence has muted my response. I actually had to think about what 10 things made me most happy. I essentially spooked myself by thinking too abstractly. That was more difficult than I had anticipated. One often defines their likes by their dislikes. To dislike something takes no sweat off one’s brow. To like something or to derive happiness from it requires a serious understanding of a thing and its component parts. With all this in mind, here are 10 things that make me happy in no particular order or classification. Keep in mind; this is not a top 10 list.

1. Bow Ties and sundry formalities of a time forgotten.

Many of the items to follow can certainly fall in the later category. In an age of when widgets are merely assembled and created with its disposability in mind, I seek out the rather rare items made to last generations. I love when something is created with care and consideration. Items with storied histories and blemishes of age attract my attention.

There, I’ve declared it. Clothes make me happy. While confidence cannot be drawn from the clothes on your back, it can be enhanced. This isn’t fashion by any means. I really do not care what other people seem to believe is “in”. Sticking to the well-tailored classics has always suited me well.

I think it is a guy thing. We all want to be James Bond for one reason or another. Jet pack, grenade pen, laser watch, underwater car...you name it he had it. Of course those are slightly more advanced that what is available to us today. I should add that these things make me happy, when they work. My iPhone being the obvious exception since it only frustrates.

While in Charlottesville with MT over the weekend, we visited Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Among the items procured during our stay was the delightful book for youth on some of the Founding Fathers. The subjects include John Hancock, Paul Revere, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson - despite the title. Lane Smith has created the exemplar publication for the education of youth on matters of history.

The book highlights each of the aforementioned characters with anecdotes about both their contribution to the forming of America as well as their individual personality. A true work of art this. The Modern Traditionalist, who gets full credit for actually finding the book, and I were laughing as we read. In addition to the physical volume there are online extensions of the experience, which as a marketing professional delights me. The extra elements include an online game, a video trailer and a theater script.

Suffice it to say, if more children's books were of this likeness, then I would not tremble for my country.

I am working from home today due to the blizzard conditions in the DC area. Working at home from the sofa, chair and dinner table really has me thinking a desk would be a practical investment. It's been making me fancy this particular desk I've been eyeing. Restoration Hardware's 1920's French Drafting Table has old world charm and modern functionality. The ability to tilt the table offers a host of convenient uses. Given this is from RH, it is likely excellently crafted as well. This is certainly on the wish list.

The greater D.C. area seems to be in a state of mass hysteria. For those of us effected (or perhaps I should say affected) by this bit of inclement winter precipitation, here are some essential boots you'll need to weather the climate.

The prototypical Bean Boot by L.L. Bean (bottom left) is for plodding through the snow banks. These boots don't discriminate; they simply dominate everything nature throws at them. Bean's construction quality leads to life-long wear. Ultimately, you'll want another - read second - pair and for that occasion they stock a profusion of styles.

Equally becoming with khaki chinos and denim, the Blundstone 500 (top left) are the most resourceful boots one can have - also my personal go-to boot. These stalwart companions require minimal care and are the labrador of the variety.

With the technical superiority of a swiss timepiece and infinitely multitalented traits of a Swiss Army knife, Raichle's hiking boots (top right), swiss-made, are as ready for climbing glaciers as they are a stroll through the park.

Once the snow begins to deliquesce, the man about town has two options at his at his disposal. For traction, the Red Wing rugged classic boot (bottom right) and for perambulating around the Alden 405 (center), or Indy Boot. Both are available at J.Crew. Each pair evinces dashing style somewhere between Steve McQueen and Harrison Ford.

Of course there are other purpose built boots for a myriad of activities these should serve as a taste of the options most germane for the conditions.

Not Nattering

Directly in the face of today's ubiquitous mindless blather and other contemptuously supercilious twaddle, let's take some time to remember the importance with which one used to address their thoughts. People paid heed to the use of their words and we should live in their likeness. When most of us are intellectually satisfied by mere newsprint and eloquent online periodicals, I will strive to provide a lagniappe of historical quotes. I have started here with the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, as his prose symbolize a brass ring of meaning, eloquence and incisiveness.

Thank You Note

Whilst we all seem to be on the topic of post holiday gratitude, I figured it was time to establish some guidelines for showing one's thanks with elegance. Firstly, there ought be no thank you emails, text messages, or the like for holiday gifts and parties. Let's agree to reserve those for the more voluminous daily socializing. The method of distinction is namely the handwritten missive. One should be composed on proper stationery and penned with a steady hand in ink from your favorite fountain pen.

But what of content, you ask. I live by four memorable rules.

1. Authenticity

Authenticity should come naturally in the note. Explain how you felt at the occasion to which you were invited or how the gift made you feel when you opened it.

2. Clarity

Clarity comes down to your grasp of flow, both of ink and thought. Do not scratch out an error! Begin again in that event. If you must, use standard paper for practice first (yes, I do this from time to time). Remember that the note is not worth much if the receiver can't read it. With regard to the language, be clear and not vague in statements you make.

3. Brevity

I have a strict rule that anecdotes must fit into a single short sentence. No one wants to read a 5 page thank you note filled with stories of how the gift reminded you of an event your childhood.

4. Eloquence

Simply write the note with the reader in mind in order to best get your point across. I presume you know enough about the individual to tailor the messaging for effectiveness.

Fine Writing Implements

In the spirit of the holiday card season, I have decided to post the following conversation with a friend – over Facebook – regarding the merits of fine writing instruments. We focused on the fountain pen. The designer and illustrator of the Bow Tie Guy drawing is A and I am B.

A-I've got an idea! Does the Bow Tie Guy use a fountain pen? Not the pricey "everybody knows the name" fancy ones, or the dime store special ones, but a real "use it every day", real man type of fountain pen. And yes, I do use them myself! I have a 1930's Sheaffer that writes like a dream!

B-I use them also. I instantly thought Montblanc when you said "everybody knows the name". I stopped using them at the office the first month since a colleague is a notorious pen pilferer. I personally default to a Lamy Safari (the steel nib allows me to loan it out without fret). I also enjoy its masculine and durable design. I could see Teddy Roosevelt signing bills with this. Also it's fairly inexpensive to replace. The 1930's Sheaffer is something to which I aspire. My one unique pen, which I inherited from my father, is an old Cartier fountain pen (I dare not use it often). As the resident expert on fine writing implements, what do you recommend a Rotring, Cross, or maybe a Conklin like Mark Twain?

A-Montblanc was exactly what I was thinking!! Kind of like the Rolex of the pen world: Overpriced and writes ok, but lots of marketing. I've never had a problem with a pen pilferer. That Lamy looks very cool. My everyday pen is an Aurora Ipsilon. It’s a great writer and Italian. I'm going to have to look into maybe getting a Lamy. I recommend a vintage Parker vacumatic.

B-I had not even seen a vacumatic. What a great looking pen!

December 5th marks the anniversary of Prohibition’s repeal in America. Having read a bit on the history of the United States, I believe it only fitting that today be celebrated. Without the rumrunners, bootleggers and back yard brewers, this nation would have become something altogether different. Whether alcohol is within your personal constitution or not, to be certain it is has played an unparalleled role in the cultural shaping of the world and ought to be recognized. In closing: Sláinte, Salut, Cheers, Prost, et al. Be careful and enjoy.

Why Webinars?

I have an aversion to webinars. In the field of social media marketing, they are prolific. Due to the state of business, webinars provide a great way to exchange information without the costs of travel and time. At first glance, the benefits are significant. The virtual cornucopia of information available via online meeting seems to be unlimited. That information’s value, though, is questionable.

There hasn’t yet been a single webcast of the multitude, which has been a rival in engagement to a personal meeting. Most feel like a vast waste of time throughout and end with the sponsor plugging their very own product. So I pose this question; Do webinars add up to the wasted time they were intended to save?

Intellectual Repair

How does one’s intellect fall into disrepair you might wonder? We have all experienced the long days of business whether traveling or in the office. Daily tedium consumes the hours of precious self-time sparing little time to fuel the intellect. Having recently gone far from homeostasis, one needs time to sit, relax and recover thy forsaken intellect.

What in the average day causes such acts of brutality? Perhaps it is the expeditious nature of our very culture. We have become so focused on the shorter faster approach rather than the simplistic approach. Often our abbreviated approach requires explanation.

Simple has become complicated, especially in the advertising industry, which is perennially focused on the needs of the lowest common denominator. Why does simple have to be simpleminded? Lest we forget Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest minds of all-time, believed that simple was the ultimate form of sophistication.

Let us all strive to put the sophistication back into simple.

Is the Starbucks experience lost?

As an avid Starbucks patron, some would argue coffee addict, I have noticed a degree of downward delta in the experience. Most recently, the Via campaign has incited for me reservations on the state of Starbucks. How does instant coffee fit with the image of a coffee chain once set on bringing the European coffee experience to American consumers? How will this latest product addition change that experience?

I have no issue with the offering of instant brew. In point of fact, it offers a great deal of variety to the mélange of choices ever-present in coffee houses. The imbiber is now empowered to control the strength of their individual cup o’ java. Instant coffee has been a cultural staple the world around; nonetheless, I wonder how will it affect our increasingly instant culture. At one time, people took the time to sit and mutually enjoy coffee. For now, I’ll take my time and be true to the brew.

Why the Bow Tie?

First let us dispel some misconceptions of bow tie wearers. Not all who don the bow are of the dweeb variety. For those brave few with chutzpah, a bow tie sends an aplomb message to passers-by and familiars alike. Recently, this particular cravat derivative has seen an increase in popularity. In style or not, the bow tie is a semblance of something lost and forgotten in our breakneck modern age.

It evokes thoughts of chivalry, decorum and etiquette far removed from the daily practices commonly exhibited today. But while this may be, some, even those who do not necessarily subscribe to the bow tie doctrine, still exhibit these dwindling traits. In no way does this appurtenance bestow or guarantee propriety; although, it goes a long way in putting on that appearance. Beyond the higher order reasons for the bow tie, they are far less cumbersome than a standard necktie.
